GCS Grades 3 and 4

The Adventures of Mrs. Bouter's Class

Back in Action – Week 29 at GCS

And here we are at the start of another week! The sun is shining and hopefully beckoning the coming of spring. 🙂 Please take note of the following:

Island Storm Game

Please look for an important announcement being sent home with your child on Monday regarding our upcoming Island Storm basketball game on Friday, April 7th.  This fundraiser allows for half the proceeds of our tickets sales to go right back to GCS. You simply buy a ticket at a reduced rate of $10, and come enjoy the game.

The Jr & Sr Cheer teams will be performing during the half-time show, and our Sr High Ladies Basketball Champions will be recognized as well.  Please send in your ticket forms and payment to your child’s homeroom teacher.  If friends, family, and/or coworkers would like to purchase tickets, please let me know and I will arrange to make that happen!

The Island Storm will also visit the elementary this coming Monday. Kids are encouraged to wear their GCS apparel!

Great Mathletics Success!

The students certainly rose to the challenge of keeping their math skills sharp! GCS is currently in tenth place in the March Madness Mathletics Competition! Only one more week to go!

I did promise that the top scoring students over March Break would receive a special treat. Congratulations to Micah Bailey (2206 points), Octavian Lui (1696 points), Jasmine Han (1550 points), Phu Vo (1721 points), and Cody Rancourt (1000 points)!

New Bible Memory Verse

This is the last Bible verse for this year as the remainder of the year will focus on learning the books of the Bible. This passage is due on April 11.

With your help I can advance against a troop;
with my God I can scale a wall.
As for God, his way is perfect:
The Lord’s word is flawless;
he shields all who take refuge in him.
For who is God besides the Lord?
And who is the Rock except our God?

  • 2 Samuel 22:30-32

Book Report Reminder

This is a reminder that the board game book report information boxes will be due this Friday, with the final project due on Tuesday, April 4. Please email me with any questions you may have.

One More Thing…

Kraft Hockeyville: PLEASE VOTE

O’Leary, P.E.I. has been named as one of 10 finalists for Hockey Night in Canada’s Kraft Hockeyville competition. This is the hometown of both Mrs. MacNeill & Mrs. Barton, both of whom have spent many hours with their friends and family over a good game of hockey. Even today, many of our students at GCS play hockey at the O’Leary Community Sports Centre. The community is already guaranteed a $25,000 dollar prize to upgrade the O’Leary Community Sports Centre, just for making the top ten. It’s hoping to be in the top two, which would mean another $100,000 for rink upgrades and the top prize – the opportunity to host a preseason NHL game. Residents of PEI are urged to showcase their Island-way of helping one another by going online to vote for O’Leary. At the same time, residents are asked to reach out to their family & friends, whether they are Islanders or not, to give O’Leary that little extra push towards the final line. Online voting begins on Sunday at 10 a.m., and runs until Monday at midnight. Please visit the Kraft Hockeyville Website to cast your multiple votes.

Winter Carnival – Week 27 at GCS

Hello parents,

Winter Carnival is here! Students are invited to join in the school spirit and participate in our themed dress-up days. Again, the days are as follows:

Monday: PAJAMA DAY – A student favorite! Wear your favorite pajamas to school but
don’t forget to wake up!

Tuesday: DECADE DAY – Dress up like people from the 50’s, 60’s, 70’s, 80’s or any other decade from the past. Raid your parents’ closets!

Wednesday: RED CARPET / PRINCE & PRINCESS DAY – Dress up in formal celebration
clothes today. Wear a crown or a tiara if you want.

Thursday: DISNEY DAY – Have you got a costume? Great. Are you a creative mind who
can make one? Great. If not, join in the day by wearing a t-shirt or sweat-shirt, or carrying something with a Disney character motif.

Friday: SKIING at BROOKVALE (grades 3-12)

Mathletics

We’re off to a great start with the Mathletics March Madness competition. Currently GCS is in 19th place out of 700 Canadian school who are participating! That’s a LOT of math practice!

The Grade Three Cooking Show

Parents of non-ESL students in grade three are reminded that the Grade Three Cooking Show will take place this week on Wednesday and Thursday. Students are scheduled to present their procedural writing telling how to make a simple food on one of the two days. Please check the outline which was sent home in the agenda to see which day your child will present and ensure he or she is ready with the necessary supplies. I will be editing the remainder of the rough copies that I didn’t get to last week tomorrow so that students will have some time to practice their presentations. If it so happens that we have a snow day on Wednesday (which it looks like we may) ALL presentations will take place on Thursday.

Skiing

Permission forms and Brookvale ski rental forms will be going home for the ski trip on Friday. Please make sure these are filled out and returned to the school. Currently, only three students have told me that they will be taking ski lessons. If your child needs lessons, then please either write a note in the agenda or have your child tell me as soon as possible. If your child wishes to snowboard instead of ski, we need a written note of permission.

Upcoming Tests and Quizzes

As it is the week before March Break and grade three students have a presentation to focus on, we will NOT be having a spelling test this week.

Grade 3

  • Tuesday – Bible Memory Quiz
  • Thursday – Math Test 20 (AND Oral Math Facts Quiz on 6, 7, and 8 division tables)

Grade 4

  • Tuesday – Language Quiz 15, Bible Memory Quiz
  • Thursday – Math Quiz 11

Happy Winter Carnival!

Time “Marches” On – Week 26 at GCS

A good evening to you all,

Hope you all stayed safe on this blustery day!

School Spirit Day & Championship Basketball Game

Please join us at Holland College this Monday, March 6th, at 6:00 PM, and help us cheer our Sr. Girls Basketball team to a gold medal victory!  There will be a small admission cost associated- $5/adult and $2/student to help cover the costs of the event.

Students are strongly encouraged to wear their GCS apparel to school on Monday as well.

New Student

We are pleased to welcome Angela Fu our classroom. Angela is a grade four ESL student and I am sure the others will make her feel comfortable in our school.

Mathletics March Madness Competition

Get your math brains on, students! The elementary classes have entered a national competition through Mathletics, an award winning interactive site that aims to improve maths skills through fun activities linked to the Canadian curriculum. Students earn points by completing activities and answering questions in Live Mathletics competitions. We are hoping the enthusiasm surrounding this competition grows and will help to increase our students’ math skills. And, who knows? We may even win a prize. J

For the duration of this competition, I am allowing students to bring in devices so that, when they are finished of the required daily work, they can spend time doing Mathletics. This does not mean that you have to send in a device if you are not comfortable doing so! Students who do not have a device can use school computers if they are available. Any devices that come in will be kept in a safe place in the classroom when not in use and will be sent home at the end of the day.

Students can do Mathletics activities at home as well as in class. As long as they are connected to the internet and not using an offline Mathletics app, the points that they earn will count toward the competition.

Happy math-ing!

Mandarin Classes

GCS is proud to announce the beginning of Mandarin classes for elementary students. We look forward to welcoming Mrs. Lin who will teach Mandarin starting this Wednesday.

Scholastic Book Orders

Scholastic Reading Club flyers went home last week.  Please don’t feel you need to place an order, but if you would like to order a book for your child, the order form and the money is due on Wednesday, March 8th, 2017. All cheques are made payable to Scholastic Canada. If you have any questions, please contact kindergarten teacher, Mrs. Perry.

Winter Carnival

Grace Christian School WINTER CARNIVAL is March 13th to 17th.

Show your school spirit and join in the fun by participating in our theme days! Remember that modest, clean, neat and appropriate is always the rule! Winter Carnival is organized and sponsored by G.C.S. Student Council.

The Grade 3 Cooking Show

Grade Three Cooking Show

Next week the grade 3 students will be doing a presentation on how to make their favorite sandwich or another simple food for our unit on procedural writing. Students will need to practice their presentation at home to make it professional. Also, students will need to bring all their materials to class on the day of the presentation, which will either be next Wednesday or Thursday. We will make a formal schedule of who will present on which day at the end of this week. I can’t wait to see these little chefs in action!
