And so it begins! We had a great first week back at school and I was pleasantly surprised by the focus the students demonstrated as they hit the books again. Also encouraging was the students’ choices for their “Word of the Year” – a character or quality they want to learn about and demonstrate in 2015. There were inspiring words such as “faithful”, “diligent”, “trust”, “patient”, and “grace”. I am looking forward to seeing how the Lord will teach them to be more like the words they have chosen this year!
Science Fair Topics
It has been an absolute joy for Mrs. MacNeill to teach Science in our classroom. She is very encouraged by the students’ keen interest in Science and would like to extend an invitation to the Grade 3/4 students to participate in the school science fair this coming March. She has suggested that each student take a few moments to reflect on some of the potential topics they may wish to explore as a whole group. Remember, the topic is great, but they will need to begin by forming a testable question that can be answered using experimentation and the scientific process. Over the coming weeks, Mrs. MacNeill will work with the students to complete a full project. Following the completion of the project, students will vote on which 2 Grade 4 students will represent their class. Mrs. MacNeill would greatly appreciate if you would take a few minutes this weekend to talk to your child about potential ideas.
New Sledding Procedures
With winter in full swing, and a little bit of snow on the ground, students are very anxious to hit the fantastic sledding hill at GCS. In previous years, students have been invited to take their sleds from home to use during recess. For various reasons, including safety concerns, students are no longer permitted to take their sleds from home. GCS has purchased a significant amount of sleds for students to use during recess, and has plans in place to ensure greater safety for the students on the hill. We appreciate your cooperation on this matter, and look forward to some fun on the sledding hill this winter.
Skiing & Skating
During the months of February and March, students in Grade 3/4 will have the opportunity to participate in 3 school skates at Simmons Sports Arena. In addition to these skates, students will also enjoy 2 visits to Brookvale Ski Park. A permission slip will be sent home in the future outlining key details such as cost, required equipment, times, etc. Just a heads up for you all to dig out those skates and skis! We will require drivers to these events, so if you are willing, please make sure you let us know once the permission slips are sent home.
