GCS Grades 3 and 4

The Adventures of Mrs. Bouter's Class

Wait! One More Thing!

Hey all! I have a couple more announcements for you.

First of all, the price of Sandspit is actually $12.75 this year and not $12.50. Sorry about the misprint.

Secondly, students in grade 3-4 are asked to come to School Closing wearing Canadian colors – a mix of red, white, black, or grey will do. They are singing a song about Canada and we wish to celebrate the 150th birthday of our nation in style. If you have any questions, please contact the music teacher, Mrs. Wilting, at jwilting@gcspei.ca.

Lastly, I am sending home some various day camp and summer program brochures along with the report cards on Friday which I have neglected to send before.

Hope to see you at Sandspit tomorrow!

Mrs. Bouter

The End – Week 40 at GCS

We have reached the end! I feel incredibly blessed to have been your children’s teacher this year. It has been my pleasure to watch them grow, not only in their academics, but spiritually, emotionally, physically, and socially as well. It has been a great year! Now on to summer and beach days!

Trip to Emmanuel Bible Camp

On Monday, June 19th, students in grades 1-6 will be travelling by bus to Emmanuel Bible Camp for their year-end trip. They will enjoy a variety of camp activities such as pellet range, archery, rock wall climbing, sports, crafts, camp-wide games, swimming and canoeing (water sports will be only for students in grades 3-6). Students should pack a lunch that does not need to be heated. Also, they should come prepared with bug spray, sunscreen, a hat, layered clothing (in case it becomes cold), swim wear (for students grades 3-6), and sneakers. Students also wishing to purchase a small treat from the tuck shop, should bring their own money.  Items such as chocolate bars, ice cream, chips, candy, juice, etc are $1.50 each.

The bus will be leaving at 9:00, so please be at school on time. Students are asked to bring $2.00 to cover the cost of the bus. If you are interested in chaperoning, or have any questions, please feel free to contact me. This should be a great time to relax and have fun in the great outdoors!

Family Fun Day At Sandspit:   NO CLASSES

It is that time again – Thursday, June 22nd will be our annual GCS Sandspit day! The ride bracelets this year will be $12.50 per person and allow for all rides except the go karts. All parents are required to pay for their own bracelets. When purchasing bracelets, let the cashier know you are with the GCS group. Hours of operation are from 9:30am – 3:30pm. This is a great opportunity for you to come and enjoy your children and the fellowship of other parents. You are reminded that there is no supervision by GCS staff and each parent is responsible for either attending with their children or making provision for their children to be cared for.

School Closing:

Please join us on Friday, June 23rd, at 9:30 AM as we celebrate the 2016-2017 school year. Several of our students will be honored throughout the ceremony for their achievements and contributions to GCS this past year.  Following the ceremony, students will return to class to pick up their final report cards and will be dismissed for the summer.  Please ensure that your child is picked up by 11:30 AM.

Students who cannot attend School Closing are asked to make arrangements to pick up their report cards from the office the following week, as report cards will not be given out prior to the celebration.

Let’s enjoy this final week!

Forts and Water Craziness – Week 39 at GCS

Dearest parents,

Behold! The year draweth to a close! Grade 3/4 has some special events planned for this week and next. Take a look at what’s coming up!

Reading Forts

Waaaaay back in February we had scheduled a time for making reading forts only to have school cancelled for pretty much the entire week. Well, we’re doing it now! On Tuesday, students can come to school dressed in their jammies with their favorite book, some blankets, and even a flashlight. We will move around the furniture and use the blankets to create forts, and then spend time reading inside them. What a nice way to have fun and encourage a love of reading!

Water Craziness

It’s finally nice out and students are getting a little stir-crazy. And, quite frankly, so is their teacher. So, for the last hour of the day this coming Friday, we will head outside for a little of what I like to call water craziness! We’ll play some wet and wild games such as the classic Duck Duck Dunk, plus we’ll have water balloons for a nice water fight. Students should come with either a bathing suit to put on or a change of clothes and a towel. I am afraid they will not be able to participate if they forget their extras. Also, sunscreen is highly recommended!

Library Book Hunt

We’re on the search for any missing library books! Please ensure that they are returned as soon as possible so that Mrs. Biech can close up library for the year.

Stay Tuned…

I am still waiting on confirmation of a few details for Sandspit and School Closing. Keep an eye out for another post tomorrow!

Upcoming Assessments

Yes, there are still a couple of tests to write before the official end. On the bright side, however, there is no spelling test this week!

Grade 3

  • Wednesday – Math Test 30, Bible Memory Quiz
  • Thursday – Language Test 13

Grade 4

  • Wednesday – Math Quiz 16, Language Quiz 21, Bible Memory Quiz
  • Friday – Language Diagramming Test, Book Talk for Missionary Novel

Spring Fever – Week 37 at GCS

And here we are! One month left of school!

Dress Code Reminder

The flowers are growing fast and so are your children. In fact, students may be growing out of their clothing that fit them last fall! Thank you, parents, for working with us in dressing your children appropriately for school. With the change in seasons, we wish to provide you with this reminder.

As stated in the GCS Handbook the school’s overall dress code standard is modest, clean, neat, and appropriate. Shorts and skirts must not be shorter than just above the knee, which is typically to the tips of the fingers on most children. Girls are permitted to wear sleeveless shirts as long as the straps are wider than three finger widths (please no shirts with thin spaghetti straps). Clothing with a rebellious or negative message are considered dress code violations.
All kindergarten and elementary students must have a second pair of shoes to be worn inside. According to provincial regulations, kindergarten and elementary students are required to wear socks at all times while at school. Sandals are not permitted for this reason.

We are thrilled to see our elementary students wearing GCS apparel on a daily basis. We are even more excited when we see our parents embracing their GCS pride and purchasing clothes for themselves. For those wishing to purchase GCS apparel, please visit our online clothing store at: http://gracecs.entripyshops.com/. New items are being added regularly.

Thanks again for partnering with us. If you have additional questions, please feel free to contact me.

Happy Victoria Day! – Week 36 at GCS

Hello parents!

Hope you all had a great Victoria Day! Be sure to check out last week’s post for information regarding the Golf Tournament and the Spring Potluck and Arts Showcase.

Track Thanks

I just wanted to extend a big thank-you to those of you who came to our rescue to drive when the bus was unavailable last Wednesday. Be on the lookout for information coming up about our next track and field day on May 31st, when students in grades 3-6 (plus a few of the grade 2 students who qualified) will be competing with ACSI schools across the Maritimes. Parents are more than welcome to come join us at UPEI on that day to cheer their children on.

The Hunt for Missing Mitts

Well, winter is long behind us but I just recently went to wash all the classroom mitts that I allow students to borrow when they have forgotten their own only to find that there is only one pair left. That means that students had been taking them home. If you would be so kind as to go through your stash of mitts at home and send in the ones that you know aren’t yours, that would be greatly appreciated. I’ll check them out and see if they indeed belong to the classroom. Hopefully I can track down a few pairs so students next year can enjoy the same privilege as yours have.

Picture Orders

Your children’s lovely spring pictures were sent home last week. Please note that, although Life Touch has sent the real pictures, they still need to be purchased if you intend to keep them. If you are not planning on keeping the pictures, then please send them back. Orders and pictures that you do not want are due back on May 25th.

Upcoming Assessments

Grade 3

  • Wednesday – Language Test 11
  • Friday – Spelling Test 27, Math Test 28

Grade 4

  • Friday – Spelling Test 27

God bless!

Important Change of Plans! Plus Bible Stuff

Good afternoon everyone!

Track Try-out Day

Unfortunately, the bus that we were hoping to take to Wednesday’s track event is in the garage and not available. That means that we will need drives for Wednesday morning, going to UPEI at 9:00 and returning to the school at 12:00. Please fill out the permission slip and return by tomorrow. If you are able to drive, please indicate the number of students you are able to take.

Bible Stuff

Mrs. McGonnell informed the students today that they all did a fantastic job reciting the books of the Old Testament. Memorizing the books of the New Testament is the new goal. They will be due on Thursday, June 1st.

I think that’s it for now.

Track Try-out Day (a.k.a. In-House Track Qualifiers)

Be on the lookout for an important permission form being sent home tomorrow regarding Track Try-out Day. This Wednesday, students in grades 2-6 will be travelling by bus to UPEI to participate in training exercises for Track & Field events. This day is set aside for students to compete against their classmates to determine which students will participate in track events in the upcoming ACSI Track Meet on May 31. We will leave the school at 9:00 AM, and return to the school around 12:00 PM. Students are required to take sneakers, fitness wear, and a water bottle.

Travel Brochure

Please be aware that students have been assigned a Travel Brochure Project for Social Studies. Rough copies are due for ESL students on Friday, June 19, so that Miss Kelsey can review them with her students. For non-ESL students, rough copies are due on Tuesday, May 23. Final copies and presentations will be the week of June 5-9. Please take time to review the outline which was sent home and email me with any questions you have.

May Days – Week 34 at GCS

And just like that, we are in May! We are gearing up for lots of learning and excitement throughout the final quarter, so be sure to check the blog weekly for important notices and information.

Switch Day!

Over the past few months I’ve been acknowledging the students’ good character traits and positive attitudes by rewarding the class with little pompoms to fill up what I call my “I Like It!” Jar. The class has reached their goal of filling the jar! For a prize, the class has chosen to have a “Switch Day”. This Tuesday, grade 3 students will be switching places with the grade 4 students. (It’s actually an educational ploy to introduce some new concepts to the grade three students and to have the grade four students do some creative writing and review while having fun… Shh! Don’t tell your child!)

Say Cheese:  Dental Clinic Information

The Provincial Dental Clinic will be at GCS for two weeks this month, beginning Monday, May 8.  Please note that only preventive services will be provided and the screening is not a substitute for an annual dental examination.  It is strongly recommended that parents take their children to a dentist for regular examinations and treatment.  The Children’s Dental Care Program assists with the cost of basic dental care delivered in private and public dental offices for children from ages 3 -17.  For more information, please visit http://www.healthpei.ca/dentalhealth.

GCS Cheerleaders Expo

Family and friends are invited to attend the GCS Cheerleaders Expo on Thursday, May 11th at Immanuel Christian School gymnasium. The expo will begin at 4:30 PM, and both Jr. and Sr. cheerleaders are asked to arrive dressed to perform by 4:00 PM sharp. We hope you will join us as our cheerleaders showcase all their hard work, and championship routines!

With crocuses in bloom and birds chirping, it’s obvious that spring has arrived! That being said, it is STILL not going to be quite warm enough this week for children to be without a jacket or sweater. Please ensure your child has something to put on in the event that it is colder than it appears.

Mother, Daughter & Grandmother Tea Party

Please join us on Saturday, May 6th, at 2PM for our Mother, Daughter, Grandmother Tea Party at GCS.  We will enjoy one another’s company, make a craft, sip on some tea and lemonade, sample some sweet treats and capture a few memories on camera.  The elementary girls are asked to RSVP by May 3rd with their homeroom teacher.
